What is Belotero®?

Belotero® is a hyaluronic acid gel particle-based filler which has a special niche in the current fillers available on the market.  Hyaluronic acid is an important biological component of the dermal layer of skin, which contributes to skin firmness, structure, and elasticity. Over time, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our skin decreases, one of the consequences of which is the appearance of more fine lines and wrinkles. A soft, elastic, smaller-particle hyaluronic acid gel, Belotero® is often used for treating static fine lines around the mouth and lips and for volume correction of the lips.

How does Belotero® differ from other fillers?

The particle size of Belotero® is smaller as compared to most other hyaluronic acid fillers, which results in a thinner, softer gel particle-based filler that is mostly injected superficially to treat fine lines and wrinkles. In addition, there is no risk of the blue hue (tindel effect) that can be seen when other HA fillers are injected too superficially.

What areas can be treated with Belotero®?

Although it is FDA approved for use only in the perioral lines (around the mouth) and lip augmentation, it can also be used off-label to correct other fine lines and wrinkles such as forehead lines and crow’s feet as well as fill in tear troughs. If fine lines are being reinforced as a result of underlying repeated muscle movement (lines of facial expression), a muscle relaxant (Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin) can help to soften their appearance.

How long does Belotero® last?

Belotero® is gradually broken down in the skin over an average of 6-12 months, although individual results may vary. A potential benefit of using hyaluronic acid-based fillers is the availability of hyaluronidase (an anecdote, essentially), which can be injected into the skin and quickly breaks down the product.

Are There Any Side Effects of Belotero®?

We mix Belotero® with lidocaine to make the injection experience more comfortable. Additionally, ice packs and prescription-strength numbing cream significantly decrease discomfort. Hyaluronic acid fillers have an excellent safety record in the hands of experienced, well-trained physicians. Most commonly, temporary mild swelling and bruising can occur. Consider reviewing our treatment tips for precautions to avoid/minimize bruising prior to your treatment.
